No. Graceful Mama contains no retinol or other retinoids. Its pre-retinol comes from beta-carotene, a natural precursor to vitamin A that the skin can use as a starting point for vitamin A metabolism.

Research using human skin has shown that topically applied beta-carotene can enter the epidermis and be converted into retinyl esters — the form in which vitamin A is naturally stored in the skin. This does not make beta-carotene the same as retinol, nor does it mean they work with the same strength or in exactly the same way. '

This was a deliberate formulation choice for us. Rather than adding retinol or other retinoids directly, we wanted to take a gentler, nutrient-based approach to vitamin A. In Graceful Mama, beta-carotene comes naturally from whole-berry sea buckthorn oil, accompanied by other carotenoids, fatty acids and Coenzyme Q10.

For fine lines, the oil matters more. Gua sha has its own benefits, but the strongest evidence relates to circulation, temporary de-puffing and subtle changes in facial contour rather than fine lines themselves.

Studies on facial gua sha suggest modest but measurable effects, including improved surface microcirculation and, in some research, changes in facial contour and muscle characteristics after regular use. What has not been clearly demonstrated is a meaningful effect on fine lines from gua sha alone.

That is where the oil becomes important. Graceful Mama brings OPCs, beta-carotene and Coenzyme Q10 into the ritual — compounds studied for their antioxidant role and their association with skin elasticity and a smoother-looking appearance.

Gua sha enhances the ritual and the glide; the oil provides the nourishment that matters most for the look and feel of the skin.

CO-FOUNDER'S note

It began with just one person: my eldest daughter, who was expecting her second child. I wanted to give her something she could trust from face to belly to the soles of her feet — one honest oil, completely uncompromised. It sparked the formula for a body in change, made without a single ingredient we couldn't fully stand behind.

Years on, it still surprises me how this single bottle has found its way into so many different lives — from twenty-somethings to women well into their sixties. Even though we formulated it for head-to-toe care, it has quietly become the only face oil many of our customers ever reach for.
